ANKOLE: THE VALLEY THAT CRIED IN ITS SLEEP

ankole-cows-green-field

God gave you cattle. Time gave you 40 years. And your children are still waiting.
A letter from the future. Written in milk, sweat, and the footprints of leaders who built home.

Bagyenzi, sit down.
This is not politics. This is not a speech.
This is a eulogy or a birth announcement. You choose.

THE COVENANT WE FORGOT

In the beginning, God did not give Ankole matooke.
He did not give us rice.
He gave us THE COW.

African_AnKole_cow

The Ankole Long-Horn. Horns like the moon. Milk like honey. Skin that kings in Cape Town pay $10,000 for one animal.
That was our covenant. Our Swiss watch. Our gold mine that walks and breathes.

But what did we do?
We copied matooke from Buganda.
We ate millet, then abandoned it.
Now we import rice from Tanzania while our valleys sit empty, staring back at us.

While Buganda, under Katikiro Mayiga’s 10 years, planted coffee and built factories...
We kept our covenant in the kraal and argued over it as we enjoyed Enturire.

40 YEARS. GONE. AND THE WORLD MOVED

President Museveni gave us peace.
He gave us roads that fly over hills.
He gave us NAADS. OWC. PDM.
The door was opened wide.

But the ghosts around Rwizi whispered: “Tomorrow. Let’s talk first. Let’s have another radio show.”

So we talked.
We gossiped in Bushenyi.
We drank.
We debated until 2am.

And the valley waited.
The milk soured.
The youth left.
And 40 years died in our hands.

Switzerland had no oil. They made chocolate and watches a $200 billion name.
France had grapes. They made Cognac, $500 a bottle.
Russia had ice. They made Siberian Vodka.
Italy had sun. They made Wine.

Ankole had cattle, milk, and meat.
And we have empunu—what to show the world?
But where is Ankole Gold?
Muswaza bantumwe. We sold our birthright for porridge.

THE LEADERS WHO DID NOT WAIT

History does not remember men who blamed the center. It remembers men who built their home.

Lee Kuan Yew - Singapore.
A small island with no water, no minerals. He turned it into the financial capital of Asia. He didn’t say “wait for Malaysia.” He planted. He built. Today, “Made in Singapore” means the world.

Deng Xiaoping - Shenzhen, China.
He took one fishing village and declared it a Special Economic Zone. In 40 years, it became a city of 17 million and the factory of the world. He started with what was in his hands.

Paul Kagame — Rwanda.
After 1994, he took a broken country and branded it: clean, digital, coffee. “Rwandan Coffee” now sells in Starbucks. He didn’t wait for perfect conditions. He built them.

Nana Akufo-Addo & Otumfuo — Ghana/Ashanti.
They took cocoa and made Ghana the 2 producer in the world. They added value. “Made in Ghana Chocolate” is now in London. They turned a crop into identity.

Narendra Modi - Gujarat, India.
Before becoming PM, he turned his home state into “India’s Growth Engine.” Milk cooperatives like Amul came from Gujarat. Today, Amul is a $10 billion brand. He started at home.

Closer to home: Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga — Buganda.
In 10 years, he mobilized coffee planting, “Emwanyi Terimba”; the kingdom has started exporting and branding. He didn’t wait for State House. He moved his people.

The pattern is clear: Great leaders don’t export raw. They don’t gossip.
They take what God gave their land and turn it into a global name.

THE TABLE IS EMPTY

What God Gave Them

What They Built

What We Did

Buganda: Coffee soil

Coffee farms, Brands

We copied their matooke

Switzerland: Cows plus Cold

Chocolate plus Watches

We sell raw milk in jerrycans

France: Grapes

Cognac

We drink milk with tea

Gujarat: Milk

Amul equals $10B brand

We have no Ankole brand

Ankole: Ankole Cattle

???

We import Rice from Tanzania

Do you feel that pain in your chest? Good. That means your heart is still beating.

IT IS NOT TOO LATE. BUT IT IS LATE.

Mzee, millet fed our grandfathers. Enturire joined the social groups.
But only factories will feed our grandchildren.

So here is the cry from Kifuuta Kyotera Buddu to our causin Ankore. Here is the dream the Oracles gave me:

THE ANKOLE REVIVAL.

PLANT COCOA IN BUSHENYI, NTUNGAMO, RUBIRIZI, BUNDIBUGYO, IBANDA, ISINGIRO, RUBARE, NYAKABANDE, NTOROKO

Let the hills turn brown to gold. Milk plus Cocoa = Our identity.

cocoa-pods-on-tree-bundibugyo

BUILD “ANKOLE GOLD” CHOCOLATE PLANT IN MBARARA.

A box that says: Made in Ankole. With Ankole tinned beef.
Let a child in Dubai taste us and remember us.

BUILD THE T-BONE & LEATHER FACTORY.

Stop selling a cow for 2M. Sell a steak for $50. Sell a bag for $500.
Use the skin. Use the horns. Waste nothing.

Tinned Beef

Rwizi tinned Beef in every supermarket from Kampala to Kigali.
Amul in India and we are not?

BRAND IT OR BURY IT.

Switzerland = Precision. France = Taste.
Gujarat = Amul.
Ankole = HERITAGE.
The cow. The story. The pride.

You cannot blame Museveni for your sleeping in Enturire.
You cannot blame the radio for empty factories.
You can only blame the mirror.

Lee Kuan Yew didn’t wait. Deng didn’t wait. Kagame didn’t wait. Mayiga didn’t wait.
Why are we waiting?

20 years from now, your grandchild will ask:
Jjaajja, Kaaka, when God gave you the cow and 40 years of peace, what did you build?

What will your answer be?
Will it be factories? Or will it be silence as you sip Enturire?

Purgatory is for those who tried and failed.
We risk being remembered for never trying at all.

The valley is still fertile.
The cow is still sacred.
But the clock is ticking.

God gave you cattle.
History gave you examples.
Now give your children a legacy.

Signed,
A son of the valley who refuses to watch it die as Gorge wakes up near Kagongo Hospital.

Kaaka... “THE ANKOLE CHOCOLATE MANIFESTO”—do we write it tonight?
Or do we add Ankole to the list of places the world talks about in past tense?
