Ban on CAF Boss Should be a Lesson for Football

A few weeks ago, Fifa's Independent Ethics Committee banned the president of the Confederation of African Football (Caf), Ahmad Ahmad, a five-year ban from all football-related activities.

Apart from the obvious corruption and abuse of office, Ahmed’s other major crime that led to his downfall is bribing a select group of African FA leaders that include our own Moses Magogo. In fact, Ahmed had always taken Magogo as his sidekick in corruption errands.

Ahmed used stolen Caf money to take Magogo and company for a lavish Ummra in Saudi Arabia on top of offering them bribes to influence contracts.

The year 2017 seems like ages ago when Ahmed rose to power after ending Issa Hayatou’s long reign but it is very disappointing he has fallen on his own sword. How wrong many of us were.

To put it into a local perspective, Magogo too came with sweeping changes to enhance the game’s popularity but time has really vindicated his critics because Uganda now stands isolated in world football due his corruption scandals that saw him serve a two-month ban for stealing World Cup tickets.

Anyone who knows how the Fifa works should be worried for Magogo. The two-month ban he served may seem like a slap on the wrist but Fifa Ethics Committee used him as a decoy to get to the big fish of Ahmed.

Ugandans may not be aware that Ahmed’s conviction resulted from Magogo’s plea bargain in which he exposed Ahmed’s corruption in exchange for a lenient sentence.

My Fufa sources told me recently that Ahmed saw this as a betrayal he couldn’t let go without revenge but before he could act, Fifa cut short his reign.

So, at the moment, our Magogo is torn between a rock and a hard place with Fifa Ethics Committee keeping a noose around him.

Perhaps it was wise of him to realise the dilemma and join politics but given the way Fifa operates these days, Ugandans shouldn’t be surprised if he is the next to go after outliving his usefulness.
