Dear Group Admins: My WhatsApp Is Not Your Community Bulletin Board

tired man with phone in hand

Be honest — have you ever opened WhatsApp and found yourself in “Namukasa & Ssemwogerere Kwanjula 2026,” “St. Balikuddembe Fundraiser,” and “Nkalitezala’s Goat Project” all before 9 AM? The ghost of the devil’s star starts to dance in the cathedral.

Congrats. You’ve been kidnapped by a group admin with zero boundaries.

It’s happening to thousands of us. And while it’s lowkey hilarious that some people think my phone is their free advertising space, it’s also disrespectful, draining, and honestly illegal.

1. This ain’t vibes. It’s a violation.

Your number is your data. Uganda’s Data Protection Act 2019 says you need consent to use it. Adding me to 67 groups without asking is like walking into my house, pinning posters on my walls, and saying, “It’s for Jesus.”

No. Ask first.

2. You’re burning my data and my peace.

Each group = notifications, photos, PDFs, “Good morning” stickers at 6 AM. On a 2GB bundle, that’s my money gone. On my mental health, that’s stress I didn’t sign up for.

3. You’re exposing me to risks from the devils in the church.

Once I’m in, 500 strangers can see my number. Scammers love that. Next thing I know, I’m getting “Your MTN account is suspended” messages from someone in “Nansana Boda Sacco Fundraiser.”

Thanks, but no thanks.

The “It’s For a Good Cause” Excuse Doesn’t Fly

Yes, weddings matter. Yes, medical bills are urgent.

But good cause + bad manners = still bad manners.

If you wouldn’t barge into my office and start shouting about your fundraiser, don’t do it to my phone.

How to Be a Decent Human Instead of Dancing Like Ghosts in the Morning

  • Slide into DMs first: “Hey, we’re doing X. Cool if I add you to the group?” One yes > 67 forced adds.
  • Use broadcast lists: Only people who saved your number get it. No drama.
  • Let people leave in peace: If I exit, don’t re-add me. That’s not persistence. That’s stalking with WiFi.

Admins, you’re not above the law. One report to MTN/Airtel or NITA-U and your group gets flagged. Don’t test it.

Ugandans are done smiling and suffering. We’re:

  • Exiting and blocking on sight.
  • Reporting spam numbers fast.
  • Quoting the Data Protection Act in group chats just to watch the admin panic.

One respectful message gets you real support. 67 forced additions gets you blocked and dragged in the group description.

So here’s the deal:

My phone is mine. My data is mine. My peace is mine.

Ask before you add. Or get blocked, reported, and talked about for all the wrong reasons.

My cry deserves respect. Give it respect.

Laugh a little, but take it seriously. My phone isn’t a noticeboard. Treat it like one, and you’ll be out faster than “Good morning family” at 5 AM.
