Kampala, Turn Garbage Into Charcoal Before Garbage Turns Us Into Garbage!

Kampala can turn garbage into charcoal briquettes, create thousands of jobs, reduce waste and protect Uganda’s forests. A proposal for KCCA to act now.

My children, I have walked from Jinja to Butalejja, where boys debate with half-big English, to Kiteezi, where garbage debates with death! And I have seen a mountain that is not a mountain!

Kiteezi! That hill that is not a hill! That mountain of shame that ate our brothers and sisters! That rotting empire that smells from Bwaise to Gayaza! 1,500 TONNES every single day! From Owino plastics! From Nakasero Kawunga remains! From Katwe old tyres! From your own kitchen in Kifuuta banana peels! Rotting! Stinking! Breeding flies bigger than cockroaches! Mosquitoes doing graduation!

And on the other side of the same country, our forests! Mityana! Mukono! Buddu! Singo! Falling! Crying! Every day, pii pii pii, chainsaw! Every day, axe! Why? Charcoal! Charcoal! A sack of tree charcoal today is 120,000! A poor mother in Nansana must choose: "Do I buy charcoal to cook beans, or do I buy books for my child?" We are cutting our own lungs to cook our own food!

But Kifuuta Oracle says the solution is sleeping on top of the solution! The medicine is sleeping inside the disease!

TURN THAT GARBAGE INTO CHARCOAL!

Yes! Garbage briquettes! Waste to energy! Fuel from filth!

Take that banana peel from your Matooke, take that paper that wrapped your Rolex in Wandegeya, take that sawdust from the carpenter in Bwaise who makes beds that break in one week, take that cow dung from the kraal in Mubende, Luwero, and take that charcoal dust from the old charcoal market. Compress it! Pound it! Carbonize it! Mix it with small cassava porridge as a binder! Turn it into clean briquettes that burn 3 times longer, with no smoke to make your baby cough like an old man!

Economics that even a Primary 3 child will understand:

One sack of tree charcoal = one big tree cut down. One tree takes 10 years to grow. You cut it in 10 minutes.

One sack of garbage charcoal = zero trees cut. Zero! It takes 2 days to make from what you were going to throw in the trench!

Imagine KCCA wakes up like Rwanda did!

charcoal-briquettes
From garbage to gold: Charcoal briquettes made from garbage.

Three factories, not for collecting fines but for making gold! One in Kiteezi, one in Mpererwe, one in Nakawa! Employ 5,000 youth! Every youth who now wakes at 11 a.m. to check who viewed his WhatsApp status: give him gloves, give him a job: sorting garbage! Drying garbage! Making briquettes! Packing! Selling on boda!

If KCCA makes 10,000 sacks a day of garbage charcoal and sells them at 60,000, cheaper than tree charcoal, that is 600 MILLION shillings a day staying inside Kampala! Not going to Mityana, Mubende, or Jinja charcoal mafia! Not going to Congo! Staying here! Every woman in Katanga, in Kalerwe, in Kawempe will say, "I want that KCCA charcoal; it has no smoke, it cooks fast!"

What happens? Tree charcoal loses its market! No market, no cutting! No cutting, forests grow! Forests grow, rain comes back! Rain comes back, our maize in Mubende grows! Our Kawunga price goes down!

And bonus: the United Nations pays for this! This is called carbon credit! Every tonne of tree charcoal you replace with garbage charcoal, Europe pays you $20 to $30 because you saved the planet! So Uganda can earn dollars not from begging, but from garbage!

Kiteezi will no longer be a grave; it will be a gold mine! Kampala will no longer be called "City of Garbage"; it will be called "City of Charcoal from Heaven!"

This is not a dream! Kenya is doing it in Dandora! Rwanda is doing it in Nduba! India makes 10,000 tonnes a day! Why not Kampala?

KCCA, don't wait for elections! Start one pilot! One machine costs 15 million! One warehouse! Show Ugandans that a sack from Kiteezi cooks Luwombo faster than a sack from Buddu forest!

Kifuuta Oracle said garbage into charcoal is not charcoal; it is Kampala breathing! It is Buddu, Budongo forests clapping! It is youth working at 5 a.m. instead of smoking weed at 5 a.m.! It is mothers cooking cheap! It is Uganda saying, "We have stopped cutting our lungs to cook our food!"
