The Buganda Royal Regatta AMAATO GA KABAKA — And It’s Bigger Than Ever

For centuries, the waters of Lake Victoria — Nalubaale — have been more than a lake to Buganda.

Since the 16th century, they’ve been our highways, our training grounds, and the stage for one of our oldest traditions: the Royal Regatta, Amaato ga Buganda.

It’s a heritage sport that belongs to the people of Buganda.

And now, by royal command, it’s being revived and reborn.

A Royal Call, A Modern Revival

The Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, tasked MMJ Immanuel Ben Misagga to bring the Royal Regatta back to life.

Not just as a ceremony, but as a living, competitive sport with new rules fit for today.

The Katikiro of Buganda, Adv. Charles Peter Mayiga, has confirmed the official boat size, canoeing with paddlers category, and the full rulebook. This isn’t nostalgia — it’s a sport being rebuilt for the next generation.

Think of it like this: Buganda is putting its own stamp on the world stage of water sports.

We’re in Good Company on the Water

Buganda’s regatta now joins a global family of iconic boat races that turn heritage into spectacle:

  1. Scotland’s Highland Regattas — Where clans have raced traditional galleys for centuries, turning community pride into fierce but friendly competition.
  2. Spain’s Traineras Races — In the Basque Country, fishing boats race along the coast with thousands lining the shore. It’s sport, history, and festival all in one.
  3. China’s Dragon Boat Festival — One of the world’s most watched water sports, blending ancient ritual with high-energy racing and millions of spectators.
  4. Italy’s Historical Regatta of Venice — Gondoliers and rowers race through the canals in a display of skill, costume, and Venetian pride that dates back to the 13th century. Like those events, Amaato ga Buganda is more than a race. It’s identity, tourism, youth engagement, and cultural diplomacy on the water.

Why This Matters

  1. Cultural Pride: It reconnects young Baganda to their maritime heritage and the Kabaka’s role as custodian of tradition.
  2. Tourism & Economy: Events like this draw crowds. Nakiwogo and Bunjako become destinations, boosting local vendors, boda riders, hotels, and artisans.
  3. Youth & Sport: Beyond football, this gives young people a new sporting pathway rooted in Buganda’s own history.
  4. Community Unity: From Entebbe to Bunjako, the regatta brings people together across clans and generations.

What’s Happening Next

The 1st round kicks off this Saturday, 27th June 2026, at Nakiwogo Landing Site, Entebbe. The Grand Final is set for 22nd August 2026 at Bunjako Beach.

In preparation, teams will do route testing this Wednesday, 24th June, starting at 9:00 am at Nakiwogo.

Come see the canoes hit the water, feel the energy, and witness history in motion.

My committee is leaving no stone unturned to make the Kabaka’s wish a reality.

Outside football, this is the heritage sport we’re geared to expand and spice up.

We are the new generation. Amaato ga Buganda is back. Awangale Ayi Ssabasajja Kabaka!
