Uganda's Commercial Banks: The Stone-age Banks That Fund the Past and Kill the Future!

Banks in Uganda are not banks; they are supermarkets for the rich! They are not planters; they are harvesters! They wait where crops have already grown and say, ‘We shall harvest!’ They never plant! They fear planting!

Now, here comes the cancer that kills Uganda more than garbage! More than malaria!

OUR BANKS! OUR COMMERCIAL BANKS! THEY ARE STILL READING TEXTBOOKS THAT THE BRITISH LEFT IN 1923!

You have this bankable project: this garbage-to-charcoal, this plastic-to-tiles, this maize bran-to-animal-feed project. You have a plan. You have built the warehouse in Njeru Nyenga with your last savings after selling your coffee in Kifuuta. You have brought the machines from China after selling your cattle. You have mechanised. You have sweated. You take it to a bank in Kampala, meet a bank manager with a tie, with a suit that shines like a frying pan, and what does the manager say with his borrowed accent?

"Mzee, bring us two years' audited accounts."

"Mzee, bring us collateral worth 200% of the loan."

"Mzee, bring us your great-grandfather's bank statement from 1962."

"Mzee, we only fund businesses that are already running." They use borrowed English: "a going concern."

Seriously? Seriously, abange? You want me to run for two years without money so that you give me money after I have already run? That is like telling a pregnant woman, "First, give birth, walk the baby, take the baby to P1, then we shall give you money for antenatal!"

This is STONE-AGE BANKING! Banking hidden in poverty, employee metaphor! Banking of fear! Employees who fear their boss in Nairobi or London more than they fear Uganda's poverty! They don't bank; they hide!

Let me give you international history so you know how foolish and naked we look:

1850, Germany: Poor like Uganda today. No factories, only small blacksmiths. German banks, Deutsche Bank and KfW, said, "We shall not fund shops; we shall fund IDEAS!" They funded a man called Krupp, who had only a small iron shed, no accounts, no collateral, only a brain! Today, Krupp makes steel for the whole world! They didn't ask for two years' accounts; they asked for two hours of brain!

1850s-germany-3-babies-toddlers-nursery
Around 1850, Germany was primarily a rural, pre-industrial society where roughly 55% of the active population worked in agriculture, and persistent poverty and wealth inequality grew steadily following the 1848 revolutions. Does this sound familiar?

1908, America: Henry Ford had no factory. He had only a garage and an idea: "A car for every man!" Banks like J.P. Morgan funded his garage! A garage! If American banks behaved like Ugandan banks, Ford would still be repairing bicycles in Detroit!

1908-Ford-Model-T
Introduced in 1908, the Ford Model T helped make cars affordable to ordinary Americans. Its success showed how investment, innovation and mass production could transform an idea into an industry, a lesson Uganda’s banks must learn.

The U.S. economy in 1908 was recovering from a sharp financial downturn known as the Panic of 1907, while simultaneously transitioning into a modern industrial and consumer society.

1945, Japan: Everything burnt by the atomic bomb! Hiroshima! Nagasaki! No factory was running! All warehouses were ash! Japanese banks—Mitsubishi and Sumitomo—funded ZERO-COLLATERAL projects! They said, "Bring your hands; we give you money!" They funded a man who made Toyota from bicycle parts! Today, Toyota's GDP is bigger than Uganda's by twenty times! They funded starting, not running!

November 7th 1945 - The Mitsubishi Aircraft Engine plant brought down to ashes.

1983, Bangladesh: The poorest in the world! No bank would give $2 to a woman selling bananas. Muhammad Yunus started Grameen Bank and said, "We fund the poorest without collateral! We fund the beginning!" He gave $27 to 42 women! No title deed! No audited accounts! Today, Grameen has nine million borrowers and won the Nobel Prize! Our banks want a land title in Kololo before giving one million to a boy in Katwe Kibuye.

Muhammad-Yunus-Grameen-Bank-Founder
Muhammad Yunus revolutionised banking in Bangladesh through Grameen Bank, proving that small, collateral-free loans could empower the poor, support entrepreneurship and transform lives.

2026, Silicon Valley: Today, a boy with a laptop in a coffee shop, with an idea for an app that makes dogs bark when a thief comes, gets $1 million from Silicon Valley Bank! No warehouse! No factory! No two years' accounts! Just an IDEA! Because they know: FUND THE START, AND THE START WILL RUN! FUND THE SEED, AND THE SEED WILL BECOME A FOREST!

But in Uganda, you build a warehouse! You build factory walls! You bring equipment! You show skin in the game: your last money, your wife's necklace sold, and the bank says, "Go and run for two years, then come back!" Where will he get fuel to run? From a shrine? From a girlfriend? From selling a kidney in India?

sembule-steel-mills-building
Sembule Group of Companies: Once a symbol of indigenous industrial ambition, Sembule's decline raises difficult questions about industrial financing, debt recovery and the fate of Ugandan-owned manufacturing.

This is why Uganda will continue to be poor! Because banks fund only those who already have money! They fund the Indian who already has ten hardware shops to open the eleventh! They fund Sudhir to build his hundredth building! They fund the government to buy cars! But the boy in Kabwohe who wants to build his first briquette machine? No! The girl in Nakibanga, Mityana, who wants to turn mango waste into juice? No!

steel-rolling-mills-jinja
Steel Rolling Mills, Jinja: A major steel investment placed under receivership after a loan recall, highlighting the risks when industrial expansion collides with demanding financing obligations.

Banks in Uganda are not banks; they are supermarkets for the rich! They are not planters; they are harvesters! They wait where crops have already grown and say, "We shall harvest!" They never plant! They fear planting!

African-textile-mills-mbale
African Textile Mill, Mbale: A textile factory threatened with auction over unpaid loans, illustrating how debt recovery can put industrial assets and jobs at risk.

The Oracle says: Bank of Uganda must wake up! Make a law! Like Rwanda did! Tell commercial banks: 30% of your loan book must go to START-UPS! To green projects! To garbage-to-energy projects! To youth factories! To first-time builders! Or we take your licence! Because if you only fund what is already running, you will never fund the future! You will only fund the past and keep stagnant with small fish in the ocean.

And to young men: don't wait for these textbook banks! Go to Emyooga, which has fewer questions about your grandfather. Go to the UNDP Green Fund, go to the World Bank Climate Fund! They fund beginnings!

Banks, take off your British wigs! This is 2026! The British themselves no longer bank like that! They fund ideas in pubs! In garages! You are still funding files in suits! You are hiding poverty in suits!

Fund the beginning! Fund the garbage boy! Fund the charcoal girl! Fund the empty warehouse that has a dream bigger than your banking hall!

The Kifuuta Oracle says a nation that only funds what is running will never start what is coming!
